Spring is Here—Let the Cornhole Season Begin

As we all thaw out after winter, it’s exciting to view spring as a time of warmth and new beginnings. Breathe deeply and take in the crisp air, the buds and leaves, and the riot of colorful blossoms on flowering trees. If you have been cooped up throughout the winter, venture outside. If you have let your exercise regimen slip, try hitting the trails for a picturesque hike. If your muscles have been hibernating, they’ll appreciate the challenge. Take a camera along to capture the splendor of spring.

Another perk of spring is that you can fire up the grill and make fabulous meat and veggie dishes. It’s a great time to get the kids outside for fresh air and maybe even to reach out to friends and family for a backyard bash.

Few things complement a backyard get-together better than a game of cornhole. Cornhole is a popular lawn game with players or teams taking turns tossing corn bags at a platform or board with a hole in the far end. Cornhole can be played as singles or doubles. Two opposing players take turns pitching using the same cornhole platform in single play. In double play, two members of each team will be pitching from two different cornhole platforms.

Scoring a cornhole game is simple. For each hole-in, a player gets three points. Players get one point if the corn bag lands on any portion of the platform but not in the hole. No points are given for bags that do not land on the cornhole board.

The game is played until one player or team reaches 21 points at the completion of an inning. Players should not stop mid-inning. Even if one player or team has already scored the requisite number of points, the opposing player or team should be allowed to throw their bags.

Form teams, and hold a spontaneous backyard tournament this spring. One of the best virtues of the game of cornhole is its versatility. Cornhole works well for kids and adults, novices and experts. It provides a great way to enjoy each other’s company while engaging in competitive fun.
