Christmas is virtually synonymous with gifts. The tradition of gift giving is based on religious beliefs dating back to the birth of the Christ Child. Based on religious accounts, three kings from the East, now referred to as the three Magi, traveled a long distance following a star, which lead them to the newborn Christ. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. This visit of the three Magi was celebrated at the Feast of Epiphany on January 6. It is that 12-day period between Christmas and Epiphany that is referred to as the 12 days of Christmas. Over the years, the practice of giving 12 days of gifts has waned in many countries and become focused on one day – Christmas.
Today, we give gifts to express our love to family members and friends. Gifts allow us to show our respect to employees, co-workers, and bosses and also provide us a great excuse to get out and greet our neighbors.
