The Los Angeles Lakers, although recently dwelling in the bottom of the NBA rankings, have previously been among the greatest basketball teams in the world. The Lakers have won 16 NBA championships since it was founded in 1947. The team and its players are popular athletic figures throughout the world.

But there are many things about the Los Angeles Lakers that its fans worldwide may not know.

  1. The Lakers started as an NBL team in Minnesota when Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen purchased the Detroit Gems, a disbanded team of the National Basketball League. The team was named Lakers because Minnesota has been known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”.
  2. The Lakers had played in different areas since its birth as a basketball team in Minnesota. It played at the Minneapolis Auditorium from 1947-1960. When the team moved to Los Angeles in 1960, it played at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Center until 1967. From 1967 to 1999, the Lakers played at The “Fabulous” Forum. From 2000 to the present, the team calls home the Staples Center.
  3. The ownership of the Los Angeles Lakers had changed hands several times from the founders Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen who owned the team from 1948 to 1957. It was sold to Bob Short who owned it from 1957 to 1965. Jack Kent Cooke became the team owner from 1965 to 1979. Dr. Jerry Buss, who owned it until his death in 2013, purchased the team in 1979. From 2013 to the present, the Buss Family Trust owns the Los Angeles Lakers.
  4. The Los Angeles Lakers have played in three different basketball leagues since its formation as a team in Minnesota. It first played in the National Basketball League from 1947 to 1948. It moved from 1948 to 1949 to the Basketball Association of America. From 1949 to the present, the Lakers are playing for the National Basketball Association (NBA).
  5. The Los Angeles Lakers won 16 championships in the NBA. It is the second team with most championships in the NBA, next only to the Boston Celtics who has 17.
